BROOKDALE, GA — A local mother of seven has sparked heated debate online after a video surfaced showing her using food stamps to purchase large amounts of junk food at Brookdale Fresh Mart.
The woman, identified as Latoya Jenkins, 34, was recorded by another shopper while loading her cart with items such as soda, potato chips, snack cakes, frozen pizzas, candy bars, and sugary cereals. The clip, which quickly spread on social media, shows Jenkins telling her children to “grab whatever they want” as she fills the cart.
In the video, Jenkins can be heard saying, “This is what keeps my kids happy,” while adding boxes of donuts and ice cream sandwiches. Viewers expressed shock at the amount of highly processed foods being purchased, noting the lack of fresh produce or healthier alternatives.
Nutrition experts warn that diets high in sugar, sodium, and processed fats can contribute to long-term health issues, particularly in children. “Consuming large amounts of foods like soda, chips, and candy can increase risks of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease,” said Dr. Karen Phillips, a pediatric nutritionist.
Reactions online have been divided. Some commenters criticized Jenkins, arguing that taxpayer-funded benefits should be used on more nutritious options. Others defended her, pointing out the challenges of feeding a large family on a limited budget.
The video has already amassed over 2 million views, fueling an ongoing national conversation about food stamps, nutrition, and parental responsibility.
Jenkins has not publicly responded to the controversy, but her story has reignited debate over whether restrictions should be placed on what foods can be purchased with government assistance.
